Understanding The Hidden Emotional Burden Of Family Wealth

Most people assume wealth makes life easier. Sometimes it does. But over the years, I have sat with enough families to know that money can create its own set of challenges, especially as it has a habit of changing things up, bringing with it  periods of intense transition, loss, or significant identity change. A son inherits property after the death of a parent and suddenly finds himself responsible for family related decisions he never expected to make. A founder who spent forty years building a business struggles to imagine life after stepping away. Parents worry about whether their children will develop ambition and purpose when they have never had to worry about paying the bills. These conversations are often difficult because they are not really about money. They are about identity. They are about family.
